WDS at CODATA 2012 Conference – Update

We are now less than one week away from the 23rd CODATA International Conference—Open Data and Information for a Changing Planet—which will be held in Taipei on 28–31 October.

WDS is co-organizing several sessions on data publication and data citation. In particular, details on the WDS session 'Research Data enters Scholarly Communication' can be found here. Please note that a further WDS-sponsored session ‘Open Access to Data and its Impact on Society’ has now been cancelled and its principal talk moved to the high-level session HL 1.2 on 29 October (11:00–12:30).

Two WDS business meetings have also been arranged to coincide with the CODATA Conference. At the Members’ Forum on 28 October (15:30–17:30), representatives of WDS Member organizations will give updates on their activities. Moreover,an informal 'Town Hall Meeting' on 31 October (16:30–17:30) will provide those present the opportunity to meet with the new WDS Scientific Committee (see below). These meetings are public and those with an interest in joining the WDS are especially encouraged to attend.

An overview of the Conference programme, including the WDS sessions and Members' meetings is available here.

2nd WDS Scientific Committee Meets in Taipei

The WDS Scientific Committee (SC) will hold their biannual meeting on 1–2 November in Taipei. For logistical reasons, a decision was taken to change the venue of the 7th WDS-SC meeting such that it is co-located with the CODATA Conference.

This will be the first meeting between members of the 2nd WDS-SC, recently appointed by the ICSU Executive Board for a three-year term (June 2012–June 2015). To maintain continuity whilst encouraging fresh insights, six members of the previous committee were invited to serve a second term—including the Chair of the Committee, Prof. Bernard Minster—and six new members were selected. In an unprecedented step, the ICSU executive board also decided that a thirteenth seat is to be filled by an individual from the health or life sciences.

We would like to express our sincere gratitude to the outgoing Committee members for their involvement and engagement during the past three years.
