Oak Ridge Institute Selected To Host WDS-IPO
The International Science Council (ISC) and its World Data System (WDS) are extremely pleased to announce that the Oak Ridge Institute at the University of Tennessee (ORI at UT) has been chosen as the new host of the WDS International Programme Office (WDS-IPO). The new hosting is subject to the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding between ISC and ORI at UT, which is currently under development but is expected to commence on 1 April 2021 for an initial five-year period.
WDS received a number of excellent Expressions of Interest to host the WDS-IPO, all of which were highly competitive. However, the bid from ORI at UT was ultimately identified as the strongest by the ISC Governing Board in close consultation with the WDS Scientific Committee. ISC is now deep into negotiations with the selected host, and the World Data System looks forward to working with ORI at UT and its partners—including the Oak Ridge National Laboratory and the U.S. Department of State—once the arrangements for the new WDS-IPO are finalized.
ISC and WDS would also like to take this opportunity to express our huge gratitude to the Japanese government—through its National Institute of Information and Communications Technology (NICT)—and the Science Council of Japan for its generous support of the WDS-IPO over the last 10 years. The successes of WDS could not have been achieved without this support, and we expect to continue working closely with Japanese colleagues as WDS moves into its next chapter.
