10th Anniversary of WDS International Programme Office

The WDS International Programme Office (WDS-IPO) was established in April 2011 and formally inaugurated in May 2012. On Wednesday, 23 September, an online event was held to mark the tenth anniversary of the hosting of the WDS-IPO by the National Institute of Information and Communications Technology (NICT) in Tokyo, Japan. The videos are now available on the WDS YouTube channel.

The event opened the International Symposium on 'Global Collaboration on Data Beyond Disciplines', and was used to thank the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications of the Japanese government for its support of the WDS-IPO over the past decade through NICT, as well as the Science Council of Japan (SCJ). Especially, the hosting agreement between NICT and the International Science Council (ISC) comes towards its end on 31 March 2021.

The event began with an opening address from, Asao Fujiyama (Director-General, Joint Support-Center for Data Science Research) on behalf of the Research Organization of Information and Systems (ROIS), the principal convener of the Symposium. It then showcased the changes in and future of Open Science and data sharing through three keynotes by Mark Parsons (Editor-in-Chief, Data Science Journal), Mazlan Othman (Director, ISC Regional Office of Asia and Pacific), and Jens Klump (Team Leader Geoscience Analytics, Mineral Resources, CSIRO).

The second half of the event then featured a number of short presentations by key stakeholders of World Data System and its International Programme Office; highlighting the achievements of WDS during the IPO's hosting in Japan. In particular, there were in-person presentations by Hideyuki Tokuda (President, NICT), Ryoichi Fujii (President, ROIS), and Kazuhiko Takeuchi (Vice President, SCJ), as well as special recorded messages of thanks from Daya Reddy (President, ISC), Alex de Sherbinin (Chair, WDS Scientific Committee [SC]), and Elaine Faustman (Vice Chair, WDS-SC).
