Report Now Available for IODE 'International Data Sharing Workshop for Non-UN IGOs, Global and Regional Organizations and Projects, NGOs and Private Sector'
On 12 October 2020, the International Oceanographic Data and Information Exchange of the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission of UNESCO (IODE; WDS Network Member) held the International data sharing workshop for non-UN IGOs, Global and Regional organizations and projects, NGOs and private sector. The report of this online meeting is now available.
The workshop provided a scoping exercise to help construct the digital framework for the UN Ocean Decade, through sharing views on opportunities, challenges, and stakeholder needs. 84 participants from 43 organizations took part in this meeting. Participants were given extensive information on the United Nations Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development. In particular, the meeting focussed on the data chapter of the Decade, including the IOC's Inter-sessional Working Group to propose a Strategy on Ocean Data and Information Stewardship (IWG-SODIS), as well as IODE's contributions such as ODISCat, ODIS, and the IOC Ocean InfoHub.
During breakout group sessions, participants identified opportunities and challenges to data sharing and collaboration. Organizations who participated in the meeting were invited to join the IWG-SODIS and for their domain experts on semantic interoperability to join technical working groups of the IOC Ocean InfoHub project.
Given the multitude of data systems and data types, forms, and formats, as well as the difficulty to anticipate the diversity of questions that the Decade will need to answer, it was recommended to focus efforts on information and knowledge management for specific Decade products.
Rorie Edmunds (WDS Acting Executive Director) represents the World Data System in IWG-SODIS and attended the Workshop.
