WDS and Future Earth will co-convene a parallel session at the Our Common Future Under Climate Change Conference to showcase the rich datasets used by the global Future Earth community and how specific activities tackle the challenges of data management, of data gaps and bias assessment, and of data sharing and integration to advance inference for sustainability science.

Full Abstract

We live in a data rich world, and this provides the opportunity to investigate societally relevant issues in new ways and to develop evidence-based approaches for planetary management and the formulation of policy. However, managing the vast amounts of data currently being generated poses significant challenges. In particular: How do we assure the continuity of monitoring programmes? How do we assure the quality and reliability of the available data?  How do we combine diverse datasets from different scientific disciplines? How can we maximise the use of datasets to answer new questions? How do we assure the long-term preservation of datasets? How do we ensure that data is available to all?

A central aim of the Future Earth Research Programme ( is to provide the scientific evidence needed for a sustainable future. All three core research themes—Dynamic Planet, Global Development and Transformations towards Sustainability—will be informed by a variety of datasets originating from multiple disciplines and cutting across Future Earth Projects and initiatives. Carefully developed avenues to address the quality and availability of necessary data and to support their integration will therefore vitally contribute to success of the programme. Future Earth data domains range very broadly—even within single Projects—from local and global remote sensing information and climate predictions, to multi-scale social science data and populations of species or global biodiversity.
